Join Lehman Library in Celebrating All Things Geek!

The library will be hosting Geek Week March 5th-9th where students can discover their inner geek in the main level gallery where The Lord of the Rings, Disney, classic video games, Game of Thrones, The Chronicles of Narnia, Star Trek, The Hunger Games, and Star Wars posters will be on display. Items such as comic books, movies, and other types of memorabilia will also be on display!

On Monday March 5th in Lehman Library 106 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. we will also be hosting a game night where students can come and relax the week before spring break! What's better than blowing off some steam while playing Monopoly with your friends?!

In addition, on Wednesday March 7th in Lehman Library 106 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. the library employees will be holding the Geek Week Fair, where each employee will have tables set up displaying their inner geek! Topics will include true crime, romance novels, genealogy, health and wellness, yoga, and dinosaurs! Come chat the the employees about your hobbies!

Wednesday evening in Lehman Library 106 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. we will be hosting a fandom inspired trivia night! Come ready to show off your knowledge of all things geek!

They Had a Dream: What's Yours? Prince

In celebration of African American culture and music, today’s featured biography is on the famous musician and songwriter, Prince. Known as one of the most influential artist of his time, Prince is notorious for his acrobatic performances, lively and entertaining shows, and his immense talent for integrating entertainment and music that everyone could enjoy. Prince Rogers Nelson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 7, 1958. Both of Prince’s parents were musicians and Prince showed his natural love for music at the young age of three, where he would attempt to play any instrument put in front of him. Throughout high school Prince was a member of multiple bands and signed a record deal with Warner Brothers Records from 1977-1993. Though Prince recorded many controversial songs, many of his albums sold well and reached the Billboard’s Top 25. The albums Prince, Dirty Mind, and Controversy all went gold. Prince’s music was inspired by and incorporated elements from musical genres like jazz, pop, and instrumental. While some songs were provocative and sparked controversy, Prince also produced love ballads and party anthems. In 1984 Prince hit the height of his career with the release of the album Purple Rain, which sold thirteen million copies and became one of the highest selling tracks of all time. The film Purple Rain which starred Prince, was also a box office hit. Prince earned many awards throughout his career including six Grammy Awards, Radio & Records’ Top Urban Contemporary Artist of the Past twenty Years, World Music Award, entry in the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 1994, BET Award for Best Male R&B Artist in 2006, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Image Award in 2005. Today we remember Prince as an iconic musical legend!

They Had a Dream: What's Yours? Shonda Rhimes

Our featured guest today in honor of Black History Month is Shonda Lynn Rhimes. Rhimes was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1970 and is the youngest of six children. From a very young age, Rhimes became an avid reader and storyteller. After graduating high school, Rhimes attended Dartmouth where she continued to develop her writing creativity, eventually graduating with a degree in English literature. While Rhimes' parents were supportive, they were always concerned she would not make a "real living" off of writing and encouraged her to pursue a more realistic career path. Listening to her parent’s advice, Rhimes began writing copy for an ad agency, which she soon came to realize she hated doing. After she quit her job, she followed her dreams and attended the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television where she earned her Master’s degree in fine arts.

Proving that following your passion can lead to immense success, Rhimes is most notorious for producing the hit TV drama Grey's Anatomy, alongside her other popular shows Private Practice, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. Most famously in Grey's Anatomy, Rhimes is renowned for including a diverse population in her casting, celebrating men and women from all different walks of life, cultural backgrounds, age, and sexual orientation. Because of this, Grey's draws nearly twenty million viewers every Thursday for #TGIT on ABC, standing for "Thank God It's Thursday.” Since Grey’s, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder are aired back-to-back, fans can relax in a binge-worthy evening produced by Shondaland. In 2015, Rhimes published Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person, a book that takes her readers through the history of her life and how she has become so successful today, always referencing her characters and acknowledging her love for storytelling.

We have pulled popular titles from our collection that feature biographies, the history of soul and folk music, poetry written by African Americans, and books that inspired movies such as Hidden Figures. These books are also available for check out at the circulation desk!

They Had a Dream: What's Yours? Toni Morrison

Today our featured guest in celebration of Black History Month is Toni Morrison. Morrison was born in small town Ohio on February 18, 1931 during the Great Depression. Morrison attended Howard University where she earned her undergraduate degree in English with a minor in the classics. After two years, Morrison earned her Masters degree in English from Cornell University and taught for two years at Southern Texas University. In 1957, Morrison joined a writers group when she began teaching at Howard University. Morrison went on to write Beloved, which won the Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award in 1988. Morrison is recognized as a distinguished African American author whose novels are extraordinarily detailed and feature African American characters who are central to narrating her book's themes. Morrison's other works include The Bluest Eye, Sula, Song of Solomon, Jazz, and Love and A Mercy. Morrison was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1993 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
